Flute
The Central Wisconsin Cultural
Center (CWCC) will be hosting a workshop taught by Musician and Artist Joan
Johannes in “Native American Flute”. On
The
workshop is a 90-minute lecture/demonstration for people who are wondering if
the Native American Flute is an instrument they would like to play. Ms.
Johannes will explain the heritage and structure of the instrument, tell about
a few of the experiences she has had with the flute, and share the opportunities that
will be available to students if they are interested in playing the flute.
Ms.
Johannes will give an overview of what skills they should either have or desire
to develop in order to play.
Students
will learn some simple methods for creating their own songs.
Ms.
Johannes will also provide her extensive collection for viewing and give students
a chance to try flutes without having to purchase an instrument.
Recommendations
for any participants who do want to purchase flutes based on each person's
level of interest, finger-stretch, finances, level of breath control, etc. will
be provided as well.
The
workshop cost is $15.
Joan
Johannes first learned about the Native American flute in 1993 when her brother
Bill Wiese invited family members to carve flutes using the techniques he had
learned from Ojibwa carver and musician Frank Montano (Anakwad). Ms. Johannes immediately fell in love with
the haunting sound of the instrument and in 1996 purchased the first of the 35
flutes in her collection. The following summer she attended the Renaissance of
the Native American Flute workshop taught by internationally acclaimed NA flute
player RC Carlos Nakai and his flute maker Ken Light. There she spent week learning about the
instrument and improving her skills with other people who shared her passion
for the instrument. Since then, she has
returned to the workshop 10 times, as well as participating and presenting at
numerous flute workshops, composing over two hundred songs, recording a duet CD
“Heyoalinda” with Wayne McCleskey from Seattle, publishing “Four Duets for
Flute and Voice” as sheet music, and playing the flute as part of her poetry
readings (bookthatpoet.com). After a
long career as a high school teacher, this year Joan led two nature/writing
workshops with Patty Drier of Earthwonders (earthwonders.com), performed as a
poet and/or musician in schools, churches, and at community functions, and is
currently preparing to teach a workshop, “Playing Well with Others,” techniques
for duet composing/playing at a gathering of NA flute enthusiasts in
SILK FUSION Class August 22nd & 23rd,

Three-four hour sessions. Students will take home at least 2 finished pieces,
instructions and resource guide.
Session 1: Introduction and overview of process 20 minutes.
Demonstration by instructor 20 minutes Student’s hands on: laying out
the fibers for at least 2 pieces, more if time permits
1 molded 3 dimensional item
1 flat fabric piece
Session 2: Embellishing and
fashioning into finished works of art. Finished possibilities: Greeting cards,
small wall hanging, journal cover, bookmarks
Instructor will provide:
Silk fibers
Embellishing threads, fibers, ribbons, beads
etc.
Screening
Binding solutions (fabric medium and gloss
medium)
Other items needed for finishing such as
glues, cardstock, stamps, inks, needles and a
sewing machine

JEWELRY WORKSHOP
Instructor: Marcia Sawyer
Level: Beginner
Learning
Objectives: To understand and
practice beginning jewelry-making techniques using glass and crystal beads,
semi-precious stones and wire. Student
will be able to create one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, including earrings,
bracelet, pendant and necklace.
Cost: $35 fee for instruction, plus cost of
materials (approximately $10 per session).
All necessary tools will be available for use at no cost.
Four two-hour
sessions included as follows:
SESSION
ONE
- The Basics – Learn
basic skills & terminology
- Earrings – Practice using materials
and hand tools. Each student will
have the opportunity to complete at least two sets of earrings.
SESSION TWO
- Working with Wire – Let your
imagination soar in creating a wire-embellished polished semi-precious
stone pendant (suitable for wearing on a chain necklace).
SESSION
THREE
- Needle & Thread – With a few
simple stitches (and a little practice) you’ll construct a beautiful pearl tennis bracelet.
SESSION
FOUR
- Design a Set – Using acquired skills, along with a simple stringing technique, design your own unique necklace with matching earrings.
- The Pottery Studio – open every Thursday evening from 6pm to 9pm. There are three electric potters’ wheels, sculpting tables, all the tools, glazes and clay needed, including hands on instruction from area artist and teacher Joe Clark.
- Watercolor classes – These classes are four week sessions that cover the necessary tools and elements to create four wonderful watercolor paintings; an abstract, a portrait, a landscape, and a still life. There is individual student instruction and ample time to create a masterpiece.
- Basket Making – these monthly one day Workshops give beginner to advanced basket makers an opportunity to have individual instruction from area artist and weaver Sara Jane Snyder. In the three hour workshop the student learns weaving techniques creates a basket and is able to personalize their new art form.
- Kids Workshops! – This is new and exciting. The workshops started this summer and we have evolved into a regular Saturday Kids Day at the Cultural Center! We have “Paint to Music” a two hour watercolor experience that kids love! We are adding Wood Carving workshops and possibly pottery opportunities as this exciting Kids Day grows.
- Writing and Publishing Workshops - These are offered six times throughout the calendar year. These encompass everything required to begin writing, harness your work and organize it, putting it into proper format, finding a printer, publisher, and marketing opportunities available to these writers.
- Photography Classes – There are a series of classes that fall into this category, there is the 35mm classes, the Digital Classes and Film Printing classes. This is a four to six week class set up to teach each student all about their personal camera features, how they work, experimenting with their cameras and taking the best photo they can, through developing, home photo printers are popular now, and complicated, the instructor teaches every step required to get the full benefit of their investment.
- Piano Lessons – Music Department - This music program has been growing strong and much thanks goes to Sara Rifleman, the chair of the Music Committee. The Lessons are scheduled, and taught by Sara. The Adult Community Choir has come from inception to a large choir in a very short time. The participants have been heard singing at a variety of public events such as Lunch by the River, The Grand Affair events, the Big Tent event, and more. The Community Band started at the Center, grew too large and now meets at West Junior High. They are a part of out music programming.
- Life Drawing Class – Another new and exciting opportunity! This will be offered for the first time this fall. We have an enthusiastic instructor and models ready to explore the art of drawing the human form.
